Bike to Work Scheme

How does the cycle to work scheme work?

Under the government initiative, your employer will pay for your bike and you repay the cost in regular instalments taken from your gross salary. This means you are not liable for income tax, USC or PRSI with potential savings from 20% to over 50% (depending on how much tax you normally pay). You can also agree on the timeline of repayments with your employer over the next year.

Can I get an electric bike on a bike to work scheme?

Electric bikes are fully covered by the Cycle to Work Scheme up to the value of €1,500.

Bike to Work Scheme FAQs

The purpose of the bike to work scheme is to encourage more employees to cycle to and from work, or between workplaces. The benefits of the cycle to work scheme is that it contributes to lowering carbon emissions, reducing traffic congestion and improving health and fitness levels.

No. Revenue states the bike must be purchased by the employer directly. All you need to do is follow the above process.

You personally will pay the €50 deposit to secure your eBike, but that deposit will be returned to you as your employer must pay for the bike to qualify for the savings.

Your employer will arrange a 'salary sacrifice' over an agreed time. This cannot be for longer than 12 months. You will sacrifice an agreed amount of your gross salary to cover the cost of the bicycle. You only pay income tax, USC or PRSI on the balance of your salary.

However, your employer may buy the eBike for no more than €1,500 and not require you to pay for it at all attracting no BIK (Benefit in kind). In this case, you will be exempt from tax on the benefit of the cost of the bicycle.

Revenue allows you to use the Cycle to Work scheme once every four years (five years prior to 1st August 2020). The tax year in which the bicycle is bought will count as the first year. For example, if you used the Cycle to Work scheme before or during 2017, you can use the scheme again from 1st January 2021.

There is no requirement to track the use of your bike, but as part of the scheme, your employer will ask you to sign a statement stating that the bicycle is for your own use and will be mainly used for commuting to work. You are free to use the bike as you wish outside of this use.

Yes. If the bicycle is used for work related journeys, for example trips to the post office or to collect office supplies.

If you are a student and also work paying PRSI, your employer can help you avail of the scheme.

Sadly, revenue states that if you are self-employed, you are not entitled to avail of the Bike to Work Scheme unless you pay PRSI as an employee in addition to your self-employed work.

Your employer doesn’t have to participate in the scheme. If they do, they must offer it to all their employees. With cycling to work, and cycling in general, being a great way to travel, you should encourage your employer to participate in the scheme for the wellbeing of their employee.

Revenue stipulates that the purchase of the bicycle and safety equipment must be processed in one transaction only. Why not check out our electric bike accessories when buying a veloci electric bike.

Under the terms of the purchase agreement the order is non-cancellable. This means that you will need to settle all outstanding monies before you leave. The outstanding balances will be deducted from your final gross salary payment.
